Wat Mahathat

Located at Phraek Si Racha, Sangkhlaburi district, 20 kilometers southeast of Chainat, Wat Mahathat or Wat Phra Mahathat, originally named Wat Huamuang, is the ancient royal temple of Muang Phraek or Muang San built in 1354, dating back to the Dvaravati period. Sankhaburi had been an important fort town used several times as a base of the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya Kingdoms to confront the Burmese army, thus originating the name of Chainat means a “place of victory”.

Wat Mahathat houses ruined chedi with seated Buddha images, and distinguished three-star-fruit shaped prangs, housing Buddha relics built of brick and bound with cement on a square shaped plinth in the Loop Buri style. The Buddha head is fascinating with 400 years of the historical legend. You can find Lop Buri and early Ayutthaya styles of Buddha images in the temple, and a museum where ancient documents are kept.
